The Marsh Agency

Paul Marsh founded The Marsh Agency in 1994 with his wife Susanna Nicklin, after many years working as Foreign Rights Director for Anthony Sheil Associates.  The agency began as an international rights specialist, selling translation rights on behalf of literary agents and publishers in the UK, the US, Canada and New Zealand.  Following some early successes the agency moved to its Mayfair offices in 1997.

Building on this strong international reputation, the agency expanded and now also represents its own list of authors for world rights including English.  We handle literary and commercial fiction and non-fiction, specializing in authors with international potential.

The Marsh Agency has a strong presence at all the major international Book Fairs and makes regular trips abroad, including the Far East, to promote our authors and maintain excellent relationships with publishers.  We take on interns to help with all aspects of the business, many of whom have gone on to forge successful careers in publishing.

We are very proud to be associated with our many prize-winning and internationally bestselling authors including, for translation rights:  Kelley Armstrong, Kate Atkinson, Iain Banks, Simon Beckett, Giles Blunt, Bill Bryson, Meg Cabot, Jenny Colgan, Emma Donoghue, Nathan Englander, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Jonathan Safran Foer, Margaret Forster, Ariana Franklin, Lisa Jewell, Linda Holeman, Derek Landy, Jonathan Lethem, Desmond Morris, Toby Litt, China Mieville, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Vikram Seth, Daniel Tammet, Sue Townsend.  And for worldwide rights including UK & US: Heinrich Harrer, Hitomi Kanehara, Robert Macfarlane, Anita Nair, Ben Okri, Alexandra & Nikolai Tolstoy, David Yallop, Taichi Yamada.

From an initial team of three, the company has seen many changes. Paul Marsh became sole Director of the company in 2001 when Susanna Nicklin left The Marsh Agency to become Director of English PEN, and she is now the Director of Literature for the British Council.  The Marsh Agency now comprises seven full-time members of staff, several part-time members, and is joined by sister companies Paterson Marsh Ltd (formerly Mark Paterson Associates) and Campbell Thomson & McLaughlin Ltd. The three companies recently moved from Dover Street, to 50 Albemarle Street W1. To read more about this historic building click here.
